SPECIAL MEETING WITH NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (NGO) AND CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS (CSO) TOWARDS COMPLETION OF THE BASELINE STUDY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS ACTION PLAN (NHRAP)

Bangi, November 13th – YB Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said today that the Development of a National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP) for Malaysia is important and in line with current developments and the era of globalisation where there is more focus on human rights issues.

Although there are no serious human rights violations such as massacres or violence in Malaysia, nevertheless, we have our own human rights issues that we need to addressed.

Assessment on human rights by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) takes place every four years through the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process. In 2009, Malaysia has agreed to a recommendation to develop an NHRAP. The plan should reflect the needs of society.

Development of the plan is based on five main pillars namely civil and political rights; economic, social, religious and cultural rights; rights of vulnerable groups; rights of aboriginal/indigenous people; and international obligations. The development will take into consideration the needs of stakeholders and the public in accordance to the government’s policy of People First, Performance Now.

She was speaking at the opening of the Special Meeting with Representatives of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Towards the Completion of the Baseline Study for Development of Malaysia’s National Human Rights Action Plan at Putrajaya – Bangi Hotel, Selangor today.
